EPL Match Preview: Liverpool vs. Southampton

This season, it is all or nothing for Liverpool FC. It has been more than a decade since Liverpool has won the league and it appears that this season could break that streak. Last season was the perfect opportunity to break that skid but a leaky defense crumbled Liverpool in the last couple games of the season allowing Manchester City to sneak in and win the league. Manager Brendan Rodgers has brought in defenders to strengthen the back line and has even taken a few players from Southampton, the team Liverpool will face on Sunday. Liverpool vs. Southampton has the opportunity to be a close game due to Southampton’s defiance of sticking to the norm.
Southampton had to reload after losing six players to opposing English Premier League clubs, Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool. However, Southampton and manager Ronald Koeman brought in some reinforcements of his own with Shane Long, Fraser Forster, Saphir Taider, Ryan Bertrand, Graziano Pelle and Dusan Tadic. These additions will allow Southampton to once again compete for a top-half finish and eliminate relegation talks from the mouths of soccer fans and writers, such as myself.
Koeman is the newly appointed coach for Southampton after Mauricio Pochettino took a job at White Hart Lane for Tottenham, so Koeman will have to show his stuff on the first match of the season.
Liverpool will be without the services of Adam Lallana, Lazar Markovic, Jon Flanagan and Daniel Agger. This match will determine the futures of newly acquired striker, Adam Lambert and center-back Dejan Lovren. Lovren will look to make a last impression with Agger out and has impressed during this preseason.
Southampton will hopefully see their new acquisitions take the field and make an impression but Jay Rodriguez will be out for the match while Morgan Schneiderlin could be sidelined for the first match of the season.
The last match between the two teams ended in a 1-0 victory for Southampton but it could be a different story this time around. This writer predicts a 1-0 victory for Liverpool as Daniel Sturridge scores for the Reds.
