Columbus Crew and Mix Diskerud Negotiations Fizzle, Move is Disheartening for Fans
courtesy Mix Diskerud Facebook page
One thing for sure, after the negotiations between Mix Diskerud and the Columbus Crew fell apart, it was a huge misstep for American soccer. Having a player like Diskerud, who is coming into his prime at a very young age, would have been amazing for MLS but it was not in the cards. The breakdown in negotiations will see Diskerud stay at Rosenborg BK in the Norwegian Tippeligaen League.
Many rumors are surfacing regarding why negotiations fell through. Some say it is due to Diskerud’s father/agent not agreeing to the terms and others are completely unsure. It could have been because Diskerud felt it was not the right move for his career. Two years ago, Diskerud was linked to the Portland Timbers but once again the deal fell through. Diskerud, who is of Norwegian decent, may feel at home at Rosenborg which may be the reason for the stay. Diskerud has not made the reason completely clear, which has led to all this speculation.
Think about how important this move could have been for MLS and the United States. Many of the former world-class players make a move to MLS after falling from their prime rather than the other way around. Diskerud is part of the future of American soccer and having Diskerud in the United States will increase the viewership and popularity of American soccer.
Diskerud did not completely rule out making a move to Columbus in the future as Diskerud has made it clear that he loves Ohio and everything about it. Diskerud loves the fans and thanks the fans for their support of the United States Men’s National Team. Columbus, in the long run, will be fine. Columbus has the number one ranking in allocation which puts the front office in a very advantageous position regarding the recruitment of players. It’s a shame this deal fell through. The addition of Diskerud would have positive consequences as Columbus narrowly holds onto the last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
