With the U.S. Men’s National Team surprisingly making it out of the group stages of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil despite being placed in the “Group of Death” with Ghana, Portugal, and Germany, speculation has erupted over whether or not several stars who shined in Brazil will stay in Major League Soccer or continue their careers abroad.

Two of these players play for Sporting Kansas City, Graham Zusi and Matt Besler. Zusi, arguably the best crosser on the USMNT, and Besler, arguably the most consistent defender on the USMNT, have the potential to be stars abroad.

However, both announced at halftime of the Summer friendly between the Seattle Sounders and Tottenham Hotspur that they would remain in MLS after signing on as designated players for their club side until 2018.

With their decision to stay on as members of the USA’s highest division of professional soccer, MLS is already looking more attractive to top world players. Future MLS franchise New York City FC already has several players on the way including Manchester City’s David Silva and Spanish legend David Villa, while Orlando City SC have signed Brazilian star Kaka.

Zusi and Besler, by staying in Kansas City until 2018, have opened the door for young American talent to play in MLS while still being able to get the type of money they would receive abroad. On the other hand, SKC has made a brilliant move and will continue to reap the benefits for years to come. This was a brilliant move on all sides and every party involved with benefit, with the future of American soccer benefitting the most.

Major League Soccer is on the rise, and the Zusi and Besler decisions are evidence of that. With a new Collective Bargaining Agreement needing to be signed before the 2015 season, it will be interesting to see how this announcement plays into CBA discussions.
