2014 World Cup Group B Preview: Chile vs Australia

Chile vs. Australia 2014 FIFA World Cup

Group Stage Round 1: Group B: Chile vs Australia

Time: Friday, June 13, 6:00 PM EST on ESPN2

TV Channel: ESPN2

Australia played well throughout AFC World Cup Qualifying, but couldn’t seem to get it done against the quicker teams in their group. With very little confidence in their ability to make it out of Group B, one of the toughest groups in the 2014 World Cup, the Socceroos will have to play the game of their lives if they are to halt a talented Chilean side.

Chile believe that they are a talented enough team to make it out of Group B, even with Spain and the Netherlands awaiting them in the next few games. Led by veteran goalkeeper Claudio Bravo and underrated Barcelona goal scorer Alexis Sanchez, Chile has more than just a chance to make it to the knockout stages, but they have to open up with a huge win.

What to Watch For:

Australia’s Tim Cahill will command the midfield for both teams, but Australia doesn’t have the talent down the wings to stop the Chilean attack. Expect most of the game to be played down the sides, while Australia tries desperately to keep the ball contained in the midfield.

Remember, Chile must win this game if they are to make it out of the group, so don’t be surprised if the team comes out a little nervous at first.

Prediction:

Australia just doesn’t have the talent that they’ve had in the past. The team has a good midfield, but their defense isn’t going to be able to keep up with the skill that the Chileans possess. Expect a physical game in which Chile eventually comes out on top.

Chile 2, Australia 0
