LA Galaxy Can’t Coast Through LA Derby Against Chivas USA

LA Derby

This MLS season has brought forth a new success rate for Chivas USA. It may not have the same streak as Columbus Crew, but it is playing a lot better than imagined. Some of this is due to new players being picked up before the start of the season, but also some previous players have stepped up. LA Galaxy already experiences a taste of the new club during a pre-season  scrimmage that ended in a draw. This was surprising to many, but this match took place before all of Galaxy’s players were back in action; it might not be anything to worry Galaxy fans, but I think this LA Derby will not be an easy match.

There are two new players that Galaxy defenders should keep their eyes on: midfielders Mauro Rosales and Thomas McNamara. Although, both players have different backgrounds — one’s a international veteran and the other is an rookie — both have had pivotal roles in the start Chivas has had this season. On top of these two player, forward Erick Torres is really making headlines this season. He is currently leading the league in goals — tied with Colorado RapidsVicente Sánchez — with a total of four goals in four matches. Two of his goals were from penalty kicks, but scoring one goal a match is something to be proud of.

Galaxy defenders will really need to stay on their toes to make sure these player do not score. Omar Gonzalez is set to be back from the USMNT match against Mexico, but after playing a full 90 minutes, I don’t know if Gonzalez will be ready to play another 90. If he does, it might not be his best defending. To add to that, newly acquired defender James Riley is also out due to injury; this may be a bad omen for theGalaxy. I hope, Los Angeles can at least count on goalkeeper Jaime Penedo, who was absent from the last match because of visa issues, not that Brain Perk did a bad job as a back up, but Penedo is really an excellent goalkeeper for the club.

Even though, I believe it will be a challenge for Galaxy, I don’t think they will lose. Galaxy may not have a lot to show for the season, but that is because it has only had two matches, which were both against Real Salt Lake. This derby match will be a nice change of pace for the club; it is definitely not the underdog, and I think that gives it a little confidence boost. Its defense may lack depth right now, but it’s forwards Robbie Keane and Samuel will give Chivas defenders and goalkeeper Dan Kennedy a lot to fear.

Make sure to watch the LA Derby this Sunday April 6 between LA Galaxy and Chivas USA. This is the first of three matches the clubs will share this season.
